Newsletter June 5, 2017

Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,

We celebrated the class of 2017 last week during Mass and at their evening graduation. One of the most amazing things about graduation was that our students earned over $70,000 in scholarship money for Bishop Diego High School. Congratulations, graduates!

This past Sunday, we celebrated Pentecost in our church. Pentecost Sunday celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus' disciples after his ascension. The occasion is named as it is marked on the seventh Sunday after Easter, or 50 days from Easter Sunday (from the Greek word "pentekoste" or "fiftieth"). It is also considered the birth of Christianity for it is the day when Jesus' followers began the Great Commission of making disciples of all nations (Matthew 18:19-20). Pentecost is an occasion when Christians are thankful for the Holy Spirit's moving in God's work. After Jesus' resurrection and ascension to heaven, the apostles were left behind not knowing what to do. They were a small number of believers without a leader and were alone and afraid, but this wonderful feast sent them out to the world to share Jesus’ message of love and faith. As we close the Easter Season, let us all remember our calling to be disciples of Christ spreading His Good News, especially as we prepare for summer vacation. Be the Light of Christ for others!

Please join us in the church for our awards assembly at 11:00 am on Friday, June 9. This is also our last day of school and students are dismissed at Noon.

We wish all of you a safe and blessed summer vacation, filled with happy memories. Please remember that your Mathletics, Reading Eggs, and Reading A-Z subscriptions are active during the summer. Students should try to spend time each day doing something academic to ensure that they are not only retaining what they learned this year, but also growing in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.

A Blessing for Summer Vacation

Take time to claim your strength; they are gifts of God.

Take time to have fun; it's God's way of teaching you your strengths.

Take time to grow yourself; only you can grow you.

Take time to trust yourself; God trusts you.

Take time to be self-reliant; it is better than being dependent.

Take time to share with others; they will bless you, and you will bless them.

Take time to have hope, you are a child of God. Let's put ourselves into the hands of the Lord, and pray that God will bless us and our families during the wonderful months of summer.

May we all help make our home a place of relaxation, joy, love, peace and safety.

May we be generous and considerate, not thinking only about ourselves, but helping others enjoy the blessings of a summertime.

Lord God, Creator of all things, guide our steps and strengthen our hearts, during these months of summer and vacation days.

Grant us refreshment of mind and body.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
