Dear St. Raphael School Families and Friends,
Thank you to all for making Catholic Schools Week so special. Mass at Bishop Diego High School brought all of the Catholic school students together to celebrate as one student body. Hearing students from all of the schools speak to the value of a Catholic education was inspiring. From the student at Mount Carmel that spoke of the Montecito mudslide devastation and how the community as well as teachers gathered at two different campuses so students could attend school, to our very own Norah Ferguson who inspired everyone with her words about being the face of Christ for others and seeing the face of Christ in those around us. Our Catholic schools truly make us proud!
This week is going to be another one for the record books. This Wednesday, our students will participate in the Global Day of School Play. Students from all over the world are participating in this event to bring back play to enhance their learning. Why are we doing this? The answer is simple; our kids are not given enough opportunities to play. Unstructured play teaches creativity, independence, sharing, communication skills, and much more. This type of play also decreases anxiety, depression, and narcissism. The teachers are thrilled about giving our students this opportunity this Wednesday. There are a few “rules.” They are as follows: 1. No Screens: Students are encouraged to bring toys but electronic toys are not allowed. 2. No Structure: Adults will not organize or structure play in any way. It’s important for students navigate their time. 3. Stay out of the way: Adults will let students manage their own play and will not interfere except to ensure student safety. This day of play is something that we hope families will adopt for their homes. Give your children time to play and explore this amazing world that God created for us!
